That Darn Bell!

Posted by on November 12, 2015

Yesterday was the bell day from hell!  We’ve never really had any problem with the exit bell not going off but the entrance bell has periodically not worked.  Yesterday, that darn entrance bell was about to give me fits.  A good portion of the day it just didn’t work at all….and periodically worked.

Poor Michael tried looking for kinks in the line, shortened the hose, lengthened the hose, plugged the end of the hose unplugged the end of the hose, checked the connections, blew in the end of the hose…you name it.  He even hooked up a second bell so we now have 1 bell for incoming traffic and 1 for outgoing traffic…mind you they are both inside the house!  It seems to be working correctly…most of the time now.  Keep your fingers crossed!

Plenty bright....

Plenty bright….

Yesterday morning a young man came and switched out our nice big light set for a smaller LED version.  I guess they needed the bigger light set across the road at the new pad where a drill rig will be going up and more people/action will be going on….geesh.

I was a bit concerned that the smaller light set wouldn’t give off enough light…but so far it seems to be working fine.

Starting to get light out...time to open the gate!

Mid-afternoon yesterday the ‘big guy’…the Operations Manager, stopped on his way out and wanted to speak with both Michael and I to let us know that one of the daily guys was no longer allowed on the premises and that he wants us to close and lock the gates at night now.  No clue as to what’s going on but we didn’t ask any questions.

So now from dark to daylight (roughly 7:00 pm to 7:00 am) we’ll have to go and unlock/lock the gate for anyone coming or going.  Not a big deal really as the gate is not far away, it’s easy to maneuver and we don’t get much traffic in the evening/over night anyway.  And….the way we see it…as long as the gate needs to be locked and unlocked….they’ll need us here!  SCORE!

This might help visualize how bad this road is...Poor guy has no 4 wheel drive so he just floored it all the way through cuz he was a afraid he'd get stuck. Got here and the truck was smoking, license plate about to fall off, something hanging by his front tire and some metal plate rubbing on his front drivers tire!

Today marks our first week here at this gate and it’s gone very nicely.  The guys are all friendly and we get pretty much the same people every day so it’s easy enough to log them in.  We’ve averaged 69 vehicles, in and out – total, per day.  Our highest traffic day was yesterday with 92 ins and outs and out slowest day being Saturday with just 46 vehicles passing through the gates.  Weekends always seem to be the slowest.

A dirty job...but somebody's gotta do it!

Had a 2 man crew come in to empty our sewer tank this morning,  They were here all of 9 minutes.  Not much for them to empty.  They will be here once a week to take care of the sewer.

I had 4 oil trucks here early this morning looking to pick up loads…unfortunately, only 1 left with a load. For some reason there was no oil to be had.  After the truck left there was a whirlwind of activity on the pad….trucks came and went…people went here and there…trucks came and went.  It eventually took 7 or 8 guys about 2 hours but it seems that they finally got things flowing again.

I’m pretty excited to announce that we’ve accepted a position as campground managers at Jefferson Hunt Campground which is near Huntsville, Utah and is part of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest.  The position will run from approximately May 15 to September 15.  The really cool part of the whole thing is that we’ll be just 25 miles from our son, Zack, and his family who live in nearby Clearfield!!

We really enjoyed our time at Ocean Pond Campground which is part of the Osceola National Forest. We were there from October to December of 2013 while I workamped as an office assistant at the ranger station.  This campground seems similar and even smaller with just 29 sites.

Really glad you are enjoying your gate. I know that scoop on why the guy isn’t working anymore but won’t say on facebook. We are enjoying our gate 2/10th of a MI N. of you. Busy busy rigging up.

I think I like the LED light plant. They brought ours three days ago and they said they were gonna start giving all the Gate Guards LED plants. Not quite sure who “ALL” the GG’S are though !
