Once again, we had a nice, short drive today…just about 95 miles. So no hurry to hit the road. We had breakfast, did some move prep chores and then chilled for a while before we finished up our chores, hitched up and hit the road about 10:30 am.
We chose not to go north on I90 as we felt we’d already given Illinois enough of our money on their toll roads. Instead we skirted the west side of Rockford on highway 2, hitting 251 on the north side of the city. We followed 251 north until just a few miles south of the Wisconsin border when we finally hit I-90 after the toll road had ended.
From there we took I90 until just north of Janesville where we turned off on county road 26 which we stayed on all the way to Watertown…passing by Milton, Fort Atkinson, Jefferson and Johnson Creek along the way.
From Watertown we headed east on 16, then R, then O, Highview Road and eventually Crawfish Road. It was a nice ‘back roads’ drive….my favorite.
Before we got to our site we were greeted by John, the caretaker of the park. We met him last year and really enjoyed him. We chatted with him for a short while before we moved over to our gate.
We got settled into site 2 easily enough. I’d made reservations via email/phone so I already had our ‘card’ to put on the site post so we didn’t even have to go into the office to check in. We didn’t’ actually even need the card as John had already put one on the post and it was waiting for us when we arrived.
We were here almost exactly a year ago and really enjoyed this little, tiny 9 site county park. During the week we were pretty much the only ones here and then were joined on the weekend by campers. Today when we arrived there were no other campers other than the park host…ahhhh.
The campground is situated alongside the Rock River and the park offers boat rentals, which is nice. There were quite a few people taking advantage of the boat rental today.
We relaxed the rest of the day – sitting outside enjoying the beautiful weather and views. Michael made BLTs for dinner (making the bacon on the grill!). John stopped by and chatted for quite a while before he went home for the day.
We’re here until August 9th and really looking forward to the rest of our stay. We have quite a few things planned which I’m really looking forward to.
PS. We got an interesting message via this blog today. A gentleman asked if he could us a picture we took while at Ft. Hood, Texas 3 years ago. He is putting together a calendar for the soldiers of Ft. Hood (free of charge) and wants to include our photo in the calendar. Of course, we agreed and he promised to send us a copy of the final product either via PDF of or hard copy.
