Tough Times in the Oil Patch

Audie Murphy VA Hospital

Audie Murphy VA Hospital

Back to work at the shack for me again today.  Michael had a 8:45 am appointment at the Audie Murphy VA Hospital for a Sleep Study Class.  The class was supposed to educate the group (about 100 per Michael) about the cause of sleep apnea and the possible fixes.

San Antonio rush hour

Unfortunately, Michael’s class being at 8:45 am got him into San Antonio during rush hour but he still made good time and got to his appointment on time.

He was in class until about 10:15 when he and several others were allowed to leave because they were being referred to another clinic (rather than the VA Hospital) to do their sleep studies.  He’s supposed to get a letter from that clinic with further direction.  So now we wait some more…

Of course Michael can’t go to San Antonio and just come back home.  He ended up making stops at Walgreens (soda), 3 Ross Dress For Less (luggage for the cruise), The UPS Store (mail) and the car wash (truck wash again).

Digging the trench to bury the line

Digging the trench to bury the line

Two guys came and dug a trench to bury the water line so that it could be driven over since it crosses over several small ranch roads.   Once finished here (right next to the shack) they moved down the lease ways a short way and did the same thing in 2 more spots along the road.  I’m assuming that the ranch workers haven’t been able to use (or had a hard time) the roads that the water line was crossing and asked to have the line buried so that they can go about their business.

By the time they were done digging the 3 trenches and were ready to log out they were both covered in sweat and looked exhausted.  The third trench really gave them a hard time.  It wasn’t particularly hot but the humidity was pretty high.

My day went pretty smoothly…with a total of about 75 vehicles.  I had several people who I know from the past come in as well as a couple of names I know from talking with our favorite StatOil safety guy, so it was nice to put an actual face to the names he talks about.

Times are really TOUGH in the oil industry and looks like they might be that way for quite sometime.  Today I saw 3 guys (2 rig hands and 1 company man) leave for home because they were laid off….sad.  Thankfully, 2 of them already had work lined up in other fields….not all are so lucky though.  And that’s not the end of it…I know at least 1 other company man will be laid off in a week or so.

While it’s nice to see the price at the gas pumps so low the cost of a barrel of oil is so low that it affects the oil industry here in south Texas (and I would assume all over the US) hugely.

I got a little rain mid-morning but it didn’t last very long…just long enough to get my log pages wet and make the ink run.  After a while I just used a different paper to get everyone’s information and then transferred it to the actual log when I went back to the shack.

Started raining lighting about 10:30.  Hate getting the pages wet…the ink runs and just makes a mess!  Only rained a little while.  Sun came out about 3:00 pm.

I lost internet about 9:30 am and it was out until about 3:30 pm…just about the time that the sun came out and all the dreary hazy skies went away.  Thankfully I have some games on my laptop to keep my occupied as well as my trusty Kindle.

By 3:30 pm I was starting to get antsy and tired but I still had 2.5 hours left of my shift.  By 5:00 pm I was way ready to be done.   Michael arrived to pick me up about 5:40 and Jeremy (night guard) arrived about 5:45 pm.  After filling him in on the day’s events Michael and I hopped in the truck and headed off.

Oh my....yummy!

We drove straight to Edgar & Gladys’ for dinner…you know…the place just around the corner from where our RV Park(ing lot) is located.  It’s such a nice little local place…the food is great as well as the service and we really like it there.

Michael ordered the same (chicken fried steak) but I tried something new…stuffed hamburger steak & gravy.  It was stuffed with cheese & jalapenos (not too many…just enough) and it was really, really good. You get a choice of baked potato, fries or tater tots…the tatertots, if ordered crispy, are awesome!

After dinner we went straight home.  I was in bed at 6:59 pm.  I was SO tired for some reason I didn’t even read before turning out the light.
