Michael still has several appointments with the VA…the first of which was today. Of course in order to make that appointment he had to take the day off. Which meant he had to find someone to work for him…a relief gate guard. He didn’t have to look any further than his original partner in crime…ME!
When he originally agreed to take this gate we were told they only wanted ex-military MEN…but that seems to be kinda foggy. He’s spoken with people from the oil company and people from the gate guard company and nobody seems to say that anymore. First off…I think the ‘men only’ thing could get someone in trouble for discrimination. Anyway…he checked with all parties involved to see if I could cover for him while he goes to his appointments and was given the A-O-K. So out of retirement I came.
Michael drove me to ‘the office’, got my internet set up and then went back home to relax for a while before having to leave for his appointment in San Antonio.
I’d made bacon, eggs, biscuits and gravy yesterday so that we’d have breakfast this morning. All I had to do when I was ready to eat was pop it in the microwave for a few minutes and I was good to go! Michael did the same at home. Easy peasy!
Every other Wednesday is shift change day…which just happened to be today. Just after 6:00 am the night crew started trickling out, headed home (mostly Mississippi) for their 2 weeks off. One of the guys was going home to Nigeria for his 2 weeks! He was on his way to Houston to get on a 11 hour flight. Yikes!
The majority of my traffic was guys coming in for their 2 week hitch or guys headed out for their 2 weeks off. The next biggest category of traffic was sales calls….quite a few of them today. The 72 vehicles that passed through the gate helped the day go quickly…not too busy, but enough to keep me occupied.
About 7:00 am I got some company. I heard some barking outside, but since it was still dark I couldn’t tell who/what it was…so I went outside to find “Ginger”. She was stretching and yawning so I’m assuming she just woke up. I have no idea what/who she was barking at…but as soon as she saw me she made her way over for some lovin’. Such a sweet girl she is… It’s obvious that she belongs to someone due to her collar and the fact that she’s well fed and very clean.
I gave “Ginger” some treats and some love…we had a good chat and then she went to lie in the road and watch for traffic while I went back inside to do my thing. She hung around for several hours, dozing. Each time I went out to log a vehicle she would roll over onto her back begging for a tummy rub…which, of course, I performed.
I also had several different types of birds visit….a beautiful male cardinal and his harem of 3 females, a really cool roadrunner and a hawk of some sort.
The first of the 5 wells that are being drilled on this lease reached the desired depth and just needs to be completed so that they can move onto the next well. On average, it takes about 3 weeks to complete a well from start to finish so they have roughly another 12 weeks left here on this lease and we should be here for 7 of those weeks.
My internet went out shortly afternoon…thankfully I had brought other things to keep my occupied. I worked on a new menu, played a word game and read a little on my Kindle. The day went pretty quickly actually.
On the way to San Antonio, Michael stopped for a haircut, picked up the mail and stopped at Walmart to pick up a couple of items.
Today’s appointment was an eye doctor appointment. There seems to be a bit of a concern about glaucoma so the doctor wanted Michael to come back in 3 months but since we won’t be in the area they want to see him again in October, when we return.
Michael made it back from San Antonio about 5:50 pm. Before heading home we stopped at a little cafe here in Nordheim, Edgar & Gladys’. It’s just a mile from the house…which makes it nice and convenient. We’d heard good things about the place and decided it was worth a try.
Michael ordered a 1/2 order of chicken fried steak and I went with a 2 piece fried chicken. Each of our meals came with a salad and Michael chose fries to accompany his meal and I went with tater tots. Both meals were very good, the service was great and it was a nice, homey atmosphere. To top everything off…our meal total before tip was less than 20 dollars! You can be certain we’ll go back!
For nearly 8 weeks I have been sitting on a secret that I have FINALLY been given permission to share! We’re EXPECTING another grandbaby! Dan & Amanda are expecting their third child this fall. This will be our fifth grandchild. They currently have 2 sons. We currently have 1 granddaughter and 3 grandsons. Our granddaughter is the oldest. Another granddaughter, to sandwich those three grandsons in the middle, would be perfect! But, of course, a health baby (and Mama) is most important!
