Our lights went out at 8:15ish last night and we were sound asleep soon after. I woke up about 5:00 am and finally gave up trying to go back to sleep about 5:30 am.
I spent a nice quiet morning reading emails, sending emails, commenting on posts, making posts and watching it get lighter and lighter outside.
About 8:30 am my tummy was telling me it was time to get some breakfast. I started preparing a nice big breakfast of biscuits and gravy and then went in and told a sleeping Michael that if he wanted fresh breakfast it would be ready in about 30 minutes. His back was bothering him yesterday so he took a muscle relaxer which usually knocks him out pretty good…so there’s no tellin’ how much longer he would have slept beyond the 12 1/2 hours he’d already knocked out!
A few minutes before 1:00 pm we got a call asking Michael to head over to the gate to relieve the gate guards that were there with their RV and that Kevin and Mark would be there with the shack shortly.
As soon as Michael left I went into action. I tend to be much more productive when Michael isn’t home and today was no different. I started by sweeping the floors and then got down on my hands and knees and hand washed the floors. I actually washed it twice since after it dried the first time it still looked dusty. I’ll end up washing it again in a few days and the putting a coat of wax on it.
In between sweeping and mopping I mixed up a birthday cake for Michael and popped it in the oven so that it could bake while the floor dried. I wanted to surprise Michael with the cake yesterday but since he ended up not working I figured he’d really be surprised getting the cake the day after his birthday!
Next on my ‘To Do’ list was to give the entire house a good dusting…it wasn’t too bad since I dusted a few days ago and the rain helped keep it down some too….but it still needed it.
While I worked on my chores I also had laundry going as it had been several days since we’d last done laundry. While on a gate we had a rather small window to do laundry since the washer & dryer are in the bedroom…not that it kept either of us awake to have the machines going but once they were going neither of us wanted to enter the bedroom to switch loads.
Michael worked until 6:00 pm (home at 6:08 pm) and will be working 6:00 am until 6:00 pm for now. I’ve not seen the guard shack yet but he says it’s about 6×8, has a fridge, microwave, counter top type desk and an office chair. They also set up a porta potty which has a sink in it. He has a pretty bad internet connection so he’s thinking on how he can rectify that as he’ll need something to keep him occupied.
For the 5 hours that he was there he had about a dozen vehicles come through…not bad! It will be interesting to see what a full 12 hours shift is like.
He was feeling pretty good when he got home so he immediately went outside and did some puttering while I finished making dinner. I threw together a Chicken & Vegetable Lo Mein dish that turned out pretty good. While I cleaned up the kitchen Michael went back outside to finish his puttering. You all know how happy he is when he has time to ‘putz’.
