Travel Day: Oklahoma City To Glen Rose, Texas

Posted by on September 22, 2014

We could have driven down I-35 but decided to take I44 south to US 281 – much more scenic.  It was about the same distance but probably took a bit longer than I-35….but maybe not as I-35 went right through Fort Worth.

After a tight squeeze getting out of our site at Tinker AFB FamCamp and dropping our trash off at the dumpster we pulled out of the RV park at 8:49….11 minutes ahead of schedule….go us!

The drive was smooth and uneventful.  We pulled over on the side of the highway at one time as there was no rest area in sight and we both needed to use the facilities…thankfully we carry a bathroom with us.  The cows in the field next to the road were quite curious about these creatures that were invaded their territory.

We stopped for lunch at Kelly’s Kitchen about 10 miles south of Windthorst, Texas.  The weather was beautiful and our BLT wraps hit the spot.  We relaxed for about an hour while we surfed the internet on our tablets.

Telltale signs of the oil patch

The further we got into Texas the more scenery started to change and almost started to resemble the Texas Hill Country.  We also saw more and more oil wells (pump jacks), oil rigs and sand trucks.  We even saw a couple of companies we worked with in the oil patch last spring – Mercer and Basic.

This morning I texted our service guy with Gate Guard Services letting him know that we are on the way back and will be available next Tuesday.  Kevin called me back this afternoon to let me know he had a gate for us…tomorrow.  He misread my text and thought we were gonna be available tomorrow.  That’s ok though….we’ll give him a call next Monday and see if he has a gate for us on Tuesday or if there’s a spot for us in one of the GGS yard.  Was good to hear that there’s still work out there!

We arrived at Oakdale RV Park just before 4:00 pm.  We made a very quick stop at the office to show our Passport America card as I had already paid the $17.50 for our site when I made the reservation.  We have a full hookup pull-thru site with free wifi.  Great deal.

Michael hooked up the satellite dish as this is fall TV premiere week and we wanted to make sure that our shows were recorded tonight.  He didn’t have any problem getting it set up and we were fully hooked up and settled in for the night by 4:20 pm.
