We had a pretty quiet weekend. Saturday we decided to go nowhere and do nothing. We spent the day playing games (Euchre and Sheepshead) and Amanda grilled some yummy kabobs and we ate dinner on the front porch. It was pretty windy and there was quite a chill in the air that ended up chasing us inside before too long.
Sunday was Father’s Day and we started it off with a big breakfast. Amanda made bacon, eggs, biscuits and gravy. We all worked on getting the dishes cleaned up so we could head out on our mini adventure for the day.
Amanda planned for us to go to Lewin Farms (about an hour drive away in Wading River)to pick strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. Amanda and I understood wrong and only strawberries were ready. Darn! Oh well….we still had a good time picking. We had a tough time finding ‘good’ strawberries but succeeded in getting what we needed. Amanda got 5 pounds while I got about 2 1/2 pounds. We both had plans for our berries: Amanda planned to make freezer jam and I wanted to make a fruit salad and still have enough for strawberry shortcake.
Michael stayed with Ben and the stroller while the rest of us picked. Alex did a great job of picking just the right berries. Michael parked the stroller at one point and walked over to join the rest us…he and Ben sampling berries along the way.
When we got to the end of the strawberries rows Michael, Dan & Ben chose to walk back along the dirt road that surrounds the patch but Amanda, Alex and I still wanted to find a few more berries to complete our baskets. The grass was pretty tall and the berries were few and far between but we got what we wanted. At one point we looked back and Alex had just sat down in the middle of the row to rest…it was pretty tough work for a 2 1/2 year old.
Lewin’s also has a produce store which we stopped at after picking our share of strawberries. We picked up sweet potatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, kiwi, blueberries, pineapple, mangoes, broccoli, grapes and a huge onion.
When we were all produced out we made our way to Famous Dave’s in Smithtown for an early dinner. Michael and I hadn’t been to a Famous Dave’s in well over 5 years so it was a nice change. We shared the family feast which came with ribs, brisket, pulled pork, corn bread muffins, french fries, corn on the cob, baked beans & cole slaw. We also ordered sides of macaroni & cheese & mashed potatoes. Everything was very good and we have LOTS of leftovers.
Everyone spent the evening relaxing. Michael and I in our room watching Orange is the New Black and Dan, Amanda in their room watching Orange is the New Black. We kind of have a competition going on to see which couple finishes the series first, I think!
