Today (Saturday) was a day I’ve waited for the entire time we’ve been here in Florida. We were meeting a friend of ours for lunch in Gainesville! We’d made plans months ago to get together…that was if all the planets & stars aligned just right….and they did!
Jenny started out as the parent of one of the soldiers Michael was deployed to Iraq with (back in 2006-2007) and quickly became a friend. She and her husband, Ray, lived about 2 hours away from me…them in Iowa, me in Wisconsin. We were able to get together several times during the deployment and have kept in contact ever since. Sadly, Ray passed away a few years ago.
We had a date for 1:00 pm so Michael and I left home about 10:30 for 6o mile trip. We took our time through the back roads, stopping in Lake Butler to fill up our propane tanks. It was a nice drive with no interruptions.
We’d agreed to meet at the Red Robin at the mall. Neither of us thought about it being the Saturday before Christmas and the parking lot was packed! Thankfully, we didn’t have too hard of a time finding a parking spot for the ‘hippie’ truck. The spaces were long and wide and we fit in nicely. Jenny’s son, Adam, dropped her off so she didn’t have to worry about finding a spot.
We hadn’t seen Jenny since the day that Michael and her son, Alex, came home from Iraq – September 22, 2007.
We met at 1:00 pm and visited for 3 hours! We could have made it even longer but we thought we’d better let the waitress have her table back! Michael and I split a cheeseburger and an order of fish and chips and enjoyed both.
We did a lot of chatting about our grandbabies. Jenny is here in Florida for the birth of her 7th grandbaby, a little girl, Layla, born on 12/12. She’ll pretty much be here in Florida until the end of February.
When we finally parted ways Michael and I headed north toward home, stopping at Walmart to pick up some groceries. We got home right around 7:00 pm. After putting the groceries away we settled into our recliners for the evening.
