After a good night’s sleep we were up about 7:30 and were on our way by 9:00 am. We drove as far as exit 99 in Rochelle, Illinois where we stopped at a Petro Travel Plaza to fill up with diesel ($245.00) and to run through the Blue Beacon ($55.50) to get the coach prettied up for the rally.
Got a little thrill shortly after we hit the road again when we got passed by a pretty green semi…that was from Dahlquist Trucking, Rhinelander, Wisconsin! Michael worked for Dahlquist Heating & Cooling before he became an AGR soldier back in 1999. A very nice family owned company that he really enjoyed working for and we’ve kept in touch with over the years.
We stopped for our usual lunch at Kelly’s Kitchen – today’s menu was cheese, sausage, crackers, veggies & dip & fruit. We stayed about an hour and enjoyed watching some skydivers doing their thing.
We arrived at Country Roads RV Park in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin about 3:30 pm and were immediately welcomed by Jerry & Jaci V, who we had met at the Gulf Shores rally back in April of this year. Then Jim & Wilma L came over to introduce themselves. Next came Tom & Kathy I. Soon after…Lou & Bette D…our fellow Alabama/Mississippi chapter members – this is our 3rd rally with them. (We hadn’t even unhitched yet!) We finally got unhitched and had most of our ‘chores’ done when Jim B stopped by to say ‘hi’. Shortly after Jim left, Karen H & Herbie dropped by. I’ve been following Karen’s blog (Karen’s Koffee Klutch) for a while now and it was wonderful to meet her in person! It’s so good to be among family again!
17 of us got together for dinner at Moosejaw Pizza & Dells Brewing Company. We had about a 30 minute wait for a table so most of us went to the bar for a drink. We decided to sample 10 of their home-made beers, along with many of our friends. Ha! For people who don’t care for much beer…it was pretty funny. Alice (Mike’s mom) quit after the Coffee Stout (black coffee at its worst!) but Mike and I tried all 10…I still don’t like beer! But it was fun trying them.
For dinner Michael and I tried the all-famous (per Jim B) beer & cheese soup. It was good but a bit peppery for our liking. We also shared a ham, pineapple & green pizza which was very good – we brought 1/2 of it home! We had some really good dinner conversation with Lou & Bette D & Kathy & Dave L (having just met them this evening). Looking forward to seeing our friends John & Rana who we thought were going to be here today…hopefully tomorrow.
The rally starts tomorrow so we’re really looking forward to meeting some new friends. Starting off with a potluck breakfast at 9:00 am!
