Retirement Briefings & Physical

Posted by on March 27, 2012

On Sunday, I ordered a Day Clock for the coach from Amazon.  We don’t have much in the way of ‘decorations’ on the walls of the coach and this clock/calendar will do great for when Michael retires and we have no idea what day of the week it is!  The clock arrived today and we’ll get it settled into its new home and post a picture soon.

We still have so many things that we’d like to accomplish or purchase before we hit the road.  One of the items on our list is to renew our passports, which expired in February of this year.  I was able to fill out the forms online and print them off.  Now all we have to do is get our pictures taken, which we thought we could have done for free at Maxwell AFB however that is not the case so we will head over to the CVS in Wetumpka one day this week instead.  As soon as that is done we can send in the paperwork, photos and old passports…along with $220.oo!!  (Wow!)  It’s $110 each for a passport book or $30 each for a passport card.  The card can only be used in Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean & the Bahamas by foot or sea…not air.  So we decided to go ahead and get the passport book and not mess with the card.   The turn around time is supposed to be 6-8 weeks and I want to make sure we don’t cut it close to the time that we leave here in August.

A couple of the other items on our ‘to do before we hit the road’ list are to schedule and attend a few mandatory military briefings regarding retirement.  These briefings are called Army Career & Alumni Programming (ACAP) and go over the benefits that are available to soldiers and their spouses after they separate from the Army.  Also part of these briefings is meeting with a Veterans Affair counselor to fill out and file for VA benefits.

Michael has scheduled our (spouses are encouraged to attend) first briefing for next Tuesday, April 3rd at Fort Benning, Georgia.  We will drive down Monday afternoon (it’s about a 2 hour drive), stay in a hotel and attend the briefing Tuesday morning.  It’s exciting to be working more and more on the retirement process!  Once this briefing is completed I believe we have one more briefing to schedule and attend.

Michael also has to schedule an appointment for a complete physical at a military treatment facility.  Since he has requested to out-process from Ft Benning we’ve chosen to do our briefings there as well and hope to get his physical scheduled there as well.  We are currently trying to figure out how to go about scheduling his physical but aren’t having much luck.
